Jiu Jitsu is transforming the way we see martial arts in America.  In the very first UFC, we saw a smaller man, Royce Gracie using the leverage of his own body to beat much larger guys with moves we’d never seen before. Royce wasn’t muscle bound or gifted athletically yet he was winning over and over.  On that cold November day in 1993 we learned that Jiu Jitsu was a must have for any fighter or martial artist.  


Since the 90’s Jiu Jitsu has exploded in every major city and has become the number one martial art for kids and adults.  Nowadays, Jiu Jitsu is more than a self-defense or fighting tool.  It has become a fun way for people to get fit while being part of a healthy and supportive community.  When done correctly, Jiu Jitsu is something you can use to keep you in shape late into your 60’s and even 70’s.  


At SBG, all of our coaches have a minimum of 5 years coaching experience and are at minimum Level-1 certified coaches.  You will find our training environment safe and welcoming.


Whether you’re looking to get in incredible shape in a safe environment or take a shot at a competitive bout in the ring, Straight Blast Gym’s Kickboxing program is for you.  The SBG Kickboxing program is very different from what’s found in most other gyms.  What you won’t find is… loud techno music and boot-campy instructors screaming in an attempt to motivate you to punch and kick the air while using the worst form possible.  You also won’t find… a dingy rocky-esque type gym full of meatheads that just can’t wait to spar the new person and a coach that believes getting the cr@p kicked out of you is the only way to get better.


What you will find however, is the perfect combination of fitness and functionality.  Yeah, you’ll burn calories… lots of them.  In a typical Kickboxing class at SBG you’ll burn up to 800 calories through our Padwork Circuit Drills.  The harder you work, the more you’ll burn. All the benefits of resistance training are also yours because you’ll actually be hitting something as opposed to punching and kicking the air.  This is what leads to lean muscle development and afterburn which is what helps you continue to burn calories up to 36 hours after your workout, ultimately giving you the body you want in far less time.


We know it’s not likely that someone is going to fight you in the street but wouldn’t it be nice to have the confidence that comes with knowing that you could handle yourself if someone does?  Of course it would.  That’s why at SBG, we have competition experienced coaches coaching that have an in-depth understanding of works and what doesn’t in a fight.  Everything you learn at Straight Blast Gym has been tested in more than a decade of competition.


What separates Growing Gorilla’s from other kids programs in the city is that it combines truly effective martial arts and self-defense training with personal development and life skills.  Not only will your child learn how to deal with volatile people, they will learn the importance of respect, discipline and giving back to their community.  


Our Growing Gorillas kids martial arts program is broken up into multiple age groups starting with children as young as 5.  The classes are also broken up based on experience.  All kids start in our Explorers Program where we cover the fundamentals of martial arts and how to deal with bullying and other abusive behavior.  


Once your child has demonstrated a solid foundation and willingness to learn, they will be invited to our Leadership Team where they will learn to lead through the development of communication, discipline and charitable contribution.  


The top group within our Growing Gorillas program is our Submission Samurai’s. Here we encourage competition   Life is about competing and it’s important to learn how to win and lose at a young age.  Setting goals and working hard to attain them is the cornerstone of this program.

Before you begin any of our programs, we want you to have a proper foundation that everything else will build on.   That’s where the Foundations Program comes in. In this 12 or 16 lesson course, you will learn the techniques, movements and mentality necessary to get the most out of your program(s) of choice – Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing or MMA.


From day one in Foundations, you’ll be learning some of the most important tools that will carry you into the next level.  Whether it be an armbar in Jiu Jitsu, a jab in Kickboxing or how to do a proper squat, you’ll be learning the real deal from the very beginning.  


The Foundations program offers more personal attention and provides a safe environment for exhilarated learning. By offering more personal attention in a smaller class, Foundations prevents you from feeling overwhelmed and frustrated, which often leads to people abandoning their fitness or martial arts goals.
